Master Class and Artist Mentoring Scheme : Erkki Huhtamo
While moving image technology has progressed drastically in the recent years, its fundamentals go back several hundreds of years. They are still worth exploring – especially those that are still in use and being rediscovered. We have invited Erkki Huhtamo, pioneering media archaeologist, historian, curator and currently a Professor in the Departments of Design Media Arts, and Film, Television, and Digital Media at the University of California, Los Angeles, to tell the story of the early “illusions in motion” he has researched in a public seminar, and to search for the roots of media arts in the master class.

Erkki Huhtamo
Erkki Huhtamo is known as a founding figure of media archaeology. He has published extensively on media culture and media arts, lectured worldwide, given stage performances, curated exhibitions, and directed TV programmes. He is a professor at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), Departments of Design Media Arts, and Film, Television, and Digital Media. His most recent book is Illusions in Motion: Media Archaeology of the Moving Panorama and Related Spectacles (The MIT Press, 2013).
