48 Hour Film Challenge 2017
Have you got awesome images appearing in your mind all the time? The muse comes and goes, and if you miss out one chance, a heartrending story might have been wasted – so, when ideas pop up, grab it and go for it! Jockey Club ifva Everywhere – 48 Hour Film Challenge will be an opportunity for you to turn the freshest ideas into a 5 to 8 minute indie short film!
50 teams is selected to participate in the Film Challenge and the results have been announced!
In 2 days and 2 nights with limited time and resources, a challenge on team spirit would put participants’ creativity and organization skills to the test. Survive through writing plots and scripts, shooting and post-production. Teams who sprint to the finish line with completed short films will be eligible to compete for the “Jury Prize” (cash prize of HK$50,000) and the “Audience Prize” (cash prize of HK$50,000) !

Jury
Kwan Pun-leung
Kwan Pun-leung’s interest in studying light and shadow later led him to be a cinematographer in the movie industry. From a young age, Kwan has been asking about the meaning of life. He became a documentary director who expressed his vision about life through creative insights. His works earned him many awards around the world. Kwan believes in sharing. He was the senior lecturer at HKAPA and has been teaching filmmaking in universities in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Recently he founded “Lighthearted Media” to further promo the use of visual and sound in the new era.

Hong Kong film screenwriter, director and producer.
Clement Cheng
Originally from Vancouver, Canada. Clement Cheng started out in film as an art director, screenwriter, music video and commercial director before making the leap to helming feature films. His directorial debut is the critically acclaimed Gallants, which earned him multiple nominations for best new director, including NETPAC. Gallants won “Best Film 2010” at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society, “2010 Asia’s 10 Most Notable Film” by the Wall Street Journal, “10 Best Film 2010” by the Beijing News, “Most Notable Film 2010” by the Hong Kong Directors’ Guild and the “Best Screenplay” by the Hong Kong Screenwriters’ Guild. Gallants was invited by over 20 international film festivals, and won the “Audience Award” at the New York Asian Film Festival. The same year, Cheng directed his second feature, Merry-Go-Round, which was named “Best Chinese Film 2010” by Film Critics China. Cheng was nominated “Best Director” and “Best Screenplay” at the 30th Hong Kong Film Awards, and Gallants won “Best Picture” amongst 4 other awards. Cheng has since also picked up the role of producer for The Bodyguard(2016) and Zombiology: Enjoy Yourselves Tonight (2017).

At emergency juncture, we use everything we could. Relationships, objects, connections, thoughts, efforts. Every creation is an adventure with expectations, dreams, and fear. And I am an adventurer.

New body guard Chow feels puzzled by a strange woman who shrugs her shoulders, shakes her head and smiles at him. He asks his colleague Mak, but both cannot figure out why. Mak finally knows the real meanings of her act when he was shot at an accident.
Artists’ Statement:
The story starts with a person’s honest deed, and ends with a surprised catastrophe. In a year when fates are intertwined and bullets are flying, we are like the protagonist Chow who lives in a fog and fails to see the truth. Anyone holding on to the truth earnestly are destined to fail in relaxing themselves. Film made by iPhone.

Artists’ Statement:
Art is a journey of self-exploration. A step after another, we soon discover and understand more of ourselves. This can be a very lonely journey. Yet with loneliness comes liberation of our minds and souls.
"Life touches life", random thoughts of yours just happen to spark ideas of others. And theirs, too, influence some other people. As this process continues, many more people are inspirited. This wheel of thoughts alone, is one of the most wonderful and powerful things of humanity.

I am Happy Jim and I was glad to have joined this competition. My friends and I enjoyed it very much. The 48-hour challenge trained our minds. Teammates exchanged ideas and ignited sparks of creativity as well as that of a cherished friendship. That was what I had hoped to see most. Shooting is really interesting!

A monk from China takes shelter in a shabby house on Temple Street as he has nowhere else to stay. He discovers in the house a tree demon that feeds on babies. He decides to protect the babies and battle with the evil tree demon.
Artists’ Statement:
“There is no wisdom tree; nor a stand of a mirror bright. Since all is void, where can the dust alight?” According to Story of the Temple Street Buddha, there are three auspicious signs: big belly when empty stomached, distinctive white sclera and black iris of the eyes, and toes above ground while walking – only the shoe soles touch the soil. The Buddha has a golden halo above his head that shines through the sky and earth, illuminating the whole world.

The more pressing an emergency is, the better would the characters understand themselves and people around them. So do we.

Artists’ Statement:
Life is full of regrets and choices. It’s pity to regret, but that proves our existence. It’s important to have the right to choose, but that might lead to darkness as well. We therefore joined this competition and wrote a script about regrets and choices.

Ching and his friend organised a stand-up comedy, but the performance angered a mafia gang. The gang threatens to execute them, unless they can make the gang laugh. Ching starts to reflect upon why he is doing stand-up comedies.
Artists’ Statement:
It sounds a mission impossible to complete an action comedy within 48 hours. But the impossible can become the possible if we apply ourselves to the fullest. It sounds cliché, but that is how we feel genuinely. We hope you will like our short film Just for Fun! We are most grateful to all those who have helped Pomato!

The story is based on a true story. Facing emergencies, people think that we need to overcome obstacles by not giving up easily. But we don’t always have choices. When it comes to life and death, one can either be blamed or innocent.
