In many languages, the word “clue” carries a reference to the image of threads or ropes. The library, as a symbol of order, contains the collection and organisation of human knowledge. Knots and networks have different pairs of contrasting associations, such as connection and restriction, life-saving tools and deadly weapons, and chaos and order. The combination and tension of books, globes, ropes, knots, chains, and the statue of Sleeping Ariadne are metaphors of people finding their way through the network of information.
