“Wan Chai Imagery”
Youth Short Film Workshop & Photo Submission

 

Wan Chai Imagery is co-organised by the Wan Chai District Council’s Cultural and Leisure Services Committee and the Hong Kong Arts Centre. The aim of the program is to increase public knowledge about Wan Chai and showcase its many scenery and facets, and allow people to see this area from multiple perspectives and layers. We are now soliciting photos about Wan Chai scenery, people and every day life under the theme of “Wan Chai Today”.

The first phase “Youth Video Workshop” lets 20 local and ethnic minority young people learning filmmaking technique and exploring various stories both new and old in Wan Chai. Three short films related to the Wan Chai community will be produced.

The second phase “Photo Submission” collects photos related Wan Chai from the public. Hundreds of photo will be combined into a short film for screening. It will be screened in the Video Showcase, together with the three short films by young filmmakers.

Youth Short Film Workshop

If you live or study in Wan Chai for any length of time, you would have witnessed the many changes this community has experienced over the years. Don’t you want to record a piece of Wan Chai culture with a camera for posterity?

Wan Chai Imagery scheme offers you the chance to achieve this!

  •  Learn about filmmaking techniques from industry professionals and put them into practice;
  •  Showcase aspects of Wan Chai culture through images you captured;
  •  Show your finished films to the public.
 

About “Wan Chai Imagery”

Wan Chai Imagery is co-organised by the Cultural and Leisure Services Committee of Wan Chai District Council and the Hong Kong Arts Centre. The aim of the programme is to teach filmmaking technique to local and ethnic minority young people and allow them to explore various stories both new and old in Wan Chai, and finally use their cameras to express these stories. Three short films related to the Wan Chai community will be completed and screened to the public. Both local and ethnic minority young people between the ages of 14 and 20 with an interest and passion for filmmaking are welcome!

Youth Short Film Workshop and Filmmaking Activities

Under the tutelage of film industry professionals, workshop participants will be divided into small groups to learn about filmmaking. They will be taught storytelling technique, use of camera, as well as editing and post-production skills before embarking on their own creations!

Date and Time: The first workshop session will be from 10am to 1pm on 12 January, 2012 (Saturday). The following sessions will be arranged between the instructors and the participants.

Venue: Eric Hotung Studio, Hong Kong Arts Centre

 

Wan Chai Secret Tour

Led by Secret Tour Hong Kong tour guides, workshop participants will visit various off-the-beaten track locales in Wan Chai and explore the community’s little-known history and lore, which will help spark the participants’ creativity and provide background research materials for their own short films.

Public Screening

Three short films related to the Wan Chai community will be completed and screened to the public.

About Tutors

Vincent Chui

Graduated from Communications Arts Department of Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles. Started his career in Hong Kong Broadcast Television Company. He’s been working in the independent field since 1993. Founded Ying E Chi, a Hong Kong Independent Film Collective, with the fellow independent filmmakers to promote and distribute their films in the 1997. Made his first feature Leaving in Sorrow in 2001. The second feature Fear of Intimacy was selected in competition category in Moscow International Film Festival, 2004 and the closing film of Taipei Film festival. He had made Love is Elsewhere and Three Narrow Gates in 2008. He’s been also working in different field in the film/TV and teaching in various university in recent years. Has just finished his new film A Fig in Macau.

Tammy Cheung was born in Shanghai in 1958 and moved to Hong Kong when she was three. She studied Sociology at a local college and Film Studies at Montreal’s Concordia University.

In 1986, she founded the Chinese International Film Festival in Montreal and held the position of director of the Festival between 1986 and 1992. After moving back Hong Kong in 1994, she was involved in commercial film production, film criticism, teaching and translation.

After years of anticipation, Cheung made her directorial debut in 1999. Her works include Invisible Women (1999)Secondary School (2002), Rice Distribution (2002), Moving (2003), War (2003), July (2004) , Speaking Up (2005), Village Middle School (2006) , Speaking Up 2 (2007) , Election (2008) & After the Quake (2011).

Joseph Wu

Labelized as one of the post 80s. Graduating from City University of Hong Kong with a major in Cinematic Art. Passionate about making movies with a South Asian theme. Works including 5 minutesThe waterside, and Shabnum, the dew. Currently making a living through scriptwriting, shooting ads, visual designs, teaching, and post-production.

Photo Submission

Wan Chai Imagery is co-organised by the Wan Chai District Council’s Cultural and Leisure Services Committee and the Hong Kong Arts Centre. The aim of the program is to increase public knowledge about Wan Chai and showcase its many scenery and facets, and allow people to see this area from multiple perspectives and layers. We are now soliciting photos about Wan Chai scenery, people and every day life under the theme of “Wan Chai Today”.

Selected works will be combined into a short film for screening at the end of February, 2013. Jury members will pick out the First, Second and Third prize winners as well as five Award of Excellence recipients. People of any age, nationality and nationality are welcome to take part!

Results of the Photo Submissions will be announced at the end of February, 2013, and award winners will be notified individually, and be invited to take part in promotional activities associated with the Wan Chai Imagery programme.
